Today the fine folks at DC announced Jimmy Olsen's Supercyclopedia will be out April Fools' Day 2025. It's by Gabe Soria and me- I met Gabe in 2019 (the very weekend he pitched the idea to what was then DC Ink!'s Michele Wells) at a con in New Orleans. Gabe's a NOLA resident, a fellow Batman '66 veteran, and works at one of the greatest record stores I've ever shopped at. He'd been nurturing the idea for years, and I happened to be in the right place at the right time to eventually draw it. Jimmy was greenlit, and our old '66 editor Jim Chadwick tapped me to draw it. I had other stuff to clear out of the way, and last spring we finally got started- after Jim had passed the book to Kristy Quinn, my editor on Bombshells United and Teen Titans Go! Kristy's the best, Jim's retired and living abroad, everyone's happy :) Jimmy Olsen's Supercyclopedia finds Jimmy making a dumb mistake, and rather than getting his pal Superman to fix things ...
It's a weird thing to process. Last time we spoke was ten years ago at my sister's wedding. He was glaring at me across the room, angry over my not fulfilling a particularly unrealistic expectation of his a few years before. I walked over and reminded him that it wasn't the time or place for his nonsense, and to stop. To his credit, he did. That's it, our final interaction. We'd never gotten along. He was alcoholic, unapologetically racist, and pushed me away at every opportunity. He was in the same room as my son once, never met my daughter. He could have chosen to live differently, but didn't. If I'm mourning anything, it's that.
